Therapeutic Approach

Choosing to begin therapy can be a life changing experience, and it is important to find a therapist you feel a connection with and who is qualified to address your needs and concerns. For that reason, I offer a free phone consultation as a way of our getting to know each other a little and to discuss any issues and answer any questions you may have.

I am not the kind of therapist that will sit back and nod my head and ask, “But how does that make you feel?” I am active and engaged as we embark on a journey together, exploring the issues you feel are important in your life that may be preventing you from realizing your true potential. I will help you to gain insight into yourself by gently confronting and challenging you when I see discrepancies in your life that are causing you conflict.

As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and Registered California Addiction Specialist, I have experience helping others to understand and utilize their strengths as a foundation to help create the life they desire.

I will help you to learn new coping skills to effectively navigate and manage the challenges that our lives encounter. My clients appreciate my process and style, and are often surprised how quickly they begin to feel better about themselves and the world around them.

My work with couples draws upon my experience utilizing evidence- based practices developed by John Gottman, Gary Chapman, Dan Wiles And Sue Johnson. Each session is concluded with home assignments and exercises to practice together in between sessions. The “homework” assignments are instrumental in helping to develop, and build new relationship skills. These new skills will not only help you in your intimate relationship but relationships in other areas of your life.

There are some clients that come to sessions with my therapy dog in the room. A therapy dog can have a positive therapeutic effect and has been proven to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety and trauma. Because Ava is highly intuitive and withholds judgment while showing unconditional love, she provides additional social and emotional support for many of my clients. This is especially true with my younger teenage clients. There are times when a teen is having trouble expressing their feelings and I will suggest that they talk to Ava. Her presence in the room reduces their anxiety, putting them at ease, thus creating a feeling of safety and comfort so they can explore and discuss their feelings openly and honestly.

Psychotherapy is not a magical cure; walking this path will take time, energy and focus, yet the rewards can be great. For some, the goals are more about resolving old hurts and trauma—for others it may be improving relationship and communication skills. Others it may be struggles with substance or behavioral abuse or addiction. Because substance or behavioral issues are rarely a stand-alone problem, I look for the underlying causes, which often involve self-medicating from depression, anxiety and trauma. Many have lost their sense of identity and positive self-worth. In order to effectively treat the issues of abuse or addiction, the underlying co-occurring issues need to be addressed as well. In all cases, my aim is to increase your ability to become the whole person that you were meant to be.

Some of the potential benefits of working with a therapist include relief from anxiety, depression, and addiction, an improved sense of well-being, improved relationships and communication with family and others, an increased awareness of true self, and an overall sense of feeling more grounded and stable.
